Stone Garden Statue
Problem from my Advanced Math class that I cannot figure out?
Nancy and Harry are lifting a stone statue and moving it to a new location in their garden. Nancy is pushing the statue with a force of 120 newtons at a 60 degree angle with the horizontal while Harry is pulling the statue with a force of 180 newtons at a 40 degree angle with the horizontal. What is the magnitude of the combined force they exert on the statue?

“Composite angles
Resolve each angle into the x and y directon using pathagorean theorum.
Sin(60)=y/120
y=103.923 N
Cos(60)=x/120
x=60 N
Then the other angle.
Cos(40)=x/180
x=137.888 N
Sin(40)=y/180
y=115.702 N
Now combine the forces in the x and y directions.
x=137.888+60=197.888 N
y=115.702+103.923= 219.625 N
now to find the final force exerted, use x^2+y^2=c^2
which would equal 295.626 Newtons.
To find the direction it goes, then do arcTan(219.625/197.888)
That would equal 47.9803 degrees
So the final answer is 295.626 Newtons at 47.9803 degrees against the horizontal.
Simple. And it’s actually right. I spent 7 minutes working it out for you.”
